Redesigning the CIE website

Cambridge International Examinations

The Cambridge Internationals Examinations website is the public face of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), the world’s largest provider of international education programmes and qualifications for 5–19 year olds. Their qualifications are taken in over 160 countries and as such the site is used by millions of people a year, from students and parents to teachers and school principals. As part of an extensive site redesign I was asked to explore how the user experience of the current site could be improved and to capture and prioritise user requirements for the site redesign.

What did I do?

  • Created an online survey to capture user feedback, including use of the current site; desirability of possible new site features and benchmarking of the current user experience.
  • Carried out stakeholder interviews to capture and validate user requirements.
  • Planned and facilitated collaborative workshops to discuss and prioritise user requirements, including personas and user stories.
  • Carried out an extensive competitor review comparing the features and user experience provided by the current site to those of its main rivals (e.g. The International Baccalaureate).
  • Carried out a detailed analysis of web analytics data to investigate current site usage.
  • Created personas and facilitated the prioritisation of these (primary, secondary etc…).
  • Created user stories (defining high level functional requirements for the site) and facilitated the prioritisation of these.
  • Created a detailed sitemap and high level functional requirements document for the site
